Harvey Cohen
Dr. Harvey G. Cohen, a cultural and political historian, teaches at the Department of Culture, Media and Creative Industries at King's College London, in United Kingdom.

While a couple dozen books have been written about Ellington in the last 60+ years, they have all focused on his music, and rightly so. But when Harvey G. Cohen started sifting through Ellington's business and personal papers at the Smithsonian Institution, he realised that much of the fascinating story of Ellington's life and career had not been told, and needed a historian to appreciate the various complexities and historical connections. This resulted in his monumental book Duke Ellington’s America(University of Chicago Press, 2010) a study in cultural history. This book will be the subject of his lecture at the conference.
